COMMENT:
Tottenham Hotspur face Everton in the Football League (Carling) Cup for the first time ever on Tuesday night. Amazingly enough, these two famous clubs have always managed to avoid each other during over four decades of the competition. Everton have never won the League Cup, but were losing Finalists twice, firstly to Aston Villa in 1977 in a marathon final which needed two replays and then to bitter rivals Liverpool in the 1984 Final.
Everton's form has improved in recent weeks after a very poor start to the season, although they recently suffered a very heavy 5-0 defeat to Benfica in Portugal in the UEFA Europa League. Their last League game ended in a 3-2 defeat away to Bolton Wanderers.
Harry Rednapp's only home defeat with Spurs last season was against Everton at the end of November 2008.
Tottenham's last outing was a very disappointing 1-0 defeat to Stoke City in the Premier League, which dented their excellent start to the 2009-10 season. The match saw the return of Jonathan Woodgate but it was short-lived as he suffered concusion after just 14 minutes played. An injury to Aaron Lennon after all three substitutes had been used meant Spurs played the last 12 minutes with only 10 men.
Everton's manager David Moyes has complained about the fixture congestion his team is suffering at the moment, so it's likely that the Blues won't be fielding a full-strength team at White Hart Lane. Spurs, on the other hand, are likely to give starts to some of the first team squad members who didn't feature against Stoke, such as David Bentley, Gareth Bale, Kyle Naughton, Carlo Cudicini and Alan Hutton. Niko Kranjar is cup-tied, as he played in a previous round for Portsmouth while Ledley King, Giovani Dos Santos and Luka Modric are all injured and may be joined by Jonathan Woodgate and Aaron Lennon.
TEAM NEWS:
Harry Redknapp has a number of injuries to contend with as he prepares for Tuesday night's Carling Cup clash against Everton.
Jonathan Woodgate (head injury) and Aaron Lennon (ankle) have joined a missing list that already included Ledley King (illness/knee), Luka Modric (fractured fibula) and Giovani dos Santos (ankle). Add to that striker Jermain Defoe, who serves the second of his three-match suspension and Niko Kranjcar, who is cup-tied having played in the competition for Portsmouth.
‘Woody' was forced off just 15 minutes into his return against Stoke on Saturday after a clash of heads with James Beattie.
Harry reported earlier on Monday: "Jonathan took a bad blow to the head and he's gone for a scan today to make sure he hasn't fractured his cheekbone. His face is very swollen and we have to make sure he's okay. Obviously he's not available.
"Aaron has also gone for a scan to see what damage he's done to his ankle, hopefully it's not to bad and he'll recover."
"We've one or two more out as well - Ledley's still not fit, Luka and Gio - and Jermain is suspended."
Harry added that he was hopeful Ledley would be fit for Saturday's derby at Arsenal.
Everton have an extensive injury list, with a whole team of players likely to be unavailable. Defender John Heitinga has recovered from cramp, while Yakubu, Joseph Yobo, Leighton Baines and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov are striving to return.
HARRY ON EVERTON:
Harry Redknapp doesn't expect Everton's busy schedule to detract from their performance in the Carling Cup at the Lane tonight.
The Toffees face their third away match in six days having played in the Europa League against Benfica in Portugal last Thursday, Bolton in the Premier League on Sunday and now this fourth round encounter. "I don't think you ever get an easy game against Everton," said Harry. "I remember going to watch them at Chelsea last season when they didn't have any strikers and they were fantastic.
"We all know they will get stronger and stronger as the season goes on, like they always do and whoever David Moyes puts out will give it a go. It will be a tough game for us, for sure." Harry explained in Monday's pre-match press briefing that he was likely to make changes to the starting line-up with the likes of Alan Hutton, Gareth Bale, David Bentley and Roman Pavlyuchenko all in the frame.
"It's an opportunity for whoever plays to come in and stake a claim," added Harry. "I've got other lads who need a game, they are working hard every day on the training ground, are part of the squad and need to play. I need to get a game or two into them. They all did well in the previous rounds at Doncaster and Preston.
"We want to win every game. We've been in the final for the last two years, it was a great day against United that went to penalties and we want to go back. "We've a chance in this competition, the FA Cup - we're in three competitions and we'll give it our best shot in all of them." Goalkeeper David Button has been recalled from his loan spell at Crewe ahead of tonight's fixture.

Everton keeper Tim Howard set a new club record of 16 clean sheets in a disappointing match in which neither side had many threats on goal.
Spurs full-back Gareth Bale sent a 20-yard free-kick over the bar on 16 minutes before Ledley King blocked Jo's shot following Steven Pienaar's pass.
The second half saw Dan Gosling clatter the woodwork with a drive from the edge of the area on 68 minutes.
And Jermain Defoe went close with a fine shot on the turn a minute later.
While Howard usurped Neville Southall's record of 15 clean league sheets set back in 1996, the USA international and opposite number Heurelho Gomes were rarely tested in a game bereft of genuine goal-scoring chances.
Everton boss David Moyes made one change from the starting XI which beat Sunderland last week, with teenager Jack Rodwell making only his eighth start of the season in place of Lars Jacobsen, with Phil Neville slotting in at right-back in place of the Dane.
Injuries forced Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp into a tactical switch, opting for a five-man defence with Vedran Corluka joining Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate at centre-back, while Alan Hutton and Bale patrolled the right and left flanks.
Tom Huddlestone replaced the absent Wilson Palacios in midfield, while Defoe made his first start alongside Robbie Keane since the Irishman re-signed for Spurs in January.
The Goodison pitch, already generously watered prior to kick off, became drenched following a heavy rain burst in the first half, making passing particularly hazardous.
However, despite the slick conditions, both sides managed to string a number of passes but crucially lacked any decisiveness in the final third.
The visitors' best chance of the half fell to Bale, whose left-footed free-kick from the edge of the area just evaded the crossbar on 16 minutes.
And a timely intervention from Joleon Lescott prevented Keane from hitting the target from the edge of the area on 23 minutes.
Everton had their chances, their best coming five minutes before the interval.
The industrious Pienaar fed a pinpoint pass beyond Tottenham's centre-backs for Jo, whose shot from 16 yards was blocked by King as the Brazilian attempted to slide the ball past the onrushing Gomes.
Tim Cahill came closest to opening the scoring in the second half when his 55th-minute half-volley from 20 yards just evaded the right-hand post of Gomes' goal.
The Brazilian keeper almost added another comedy keeping gaffe to his collection minutes later when he spilled a regulation cross from Leighton Baines, only to recover the ball inches from the feet of compatriot Jo.
With momentum swinging Everton's way, Gosling came closest to breaking the deadlock on 68 minutes when his drive from the edge of the area rebounded off the left-hand post to safety.
It was the young midfielder's last contribution of the match, substituted for Leon Osman while Louis Saha replaced the largely ineffective Jo.
Neither replacement had touched the ball when Defoe fizzed a fine left-footed turn from the edge of the area past Howard's right-hand post on 69 minutes.
With defences firmly on top, neither side managed to create further chances, a draw a fair reflection of a largely uneventful match.
Everton boss David Moyes on Tim Howard's record:
"He has been fantastic, Tim Howard is a professional who works very hard at his game.
"But the record is also a compliment for the players in front of him. Good teams start with good platforms at the back and we have that.
"I thought Spurs were very good in the opening 30 minutes, we found it difficult to stay with them. But we pegged it back and the second half we played well and were unfortunate not to win."
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp:
"We dominated the first half, created good opportunities and passed the ball fantastically. But second half they stopped us from playing.
"But I thought it was a fair result, there were not a lot of chances for both sides, neither keeper has had to put out any world-class saves.
"It was interesting to get a chance to see look at players who haven't had played too much this season to see what they could do."
